History of Halloween

History of Halloween

halloween history

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve.

Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand.

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win").
The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.

The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Halloween.

Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

The history of Halloween has evolved. The activity is popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and due to increased American cultural influence in recent years, imported through exposure to US television and other media, trick-or-treating has started to occur among children in many parts of Europe, and in the Saudi Aramco camps of Dhahran, Akaria compounds and Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia. The most significant growth and resistance is in the United Kingdom, where the police have threatened to prosecute parents who allow their children to carry out the "trick" element. In continental Europe, where the commerce-driven importation of Halloween is seen with more skepticism, numerous destructive or illegal "tricks" and police warnings have further raised suspicion about this game and Halloween in general.

In Ohio, Iowa, and Massachusetts, the night designated for Trick-or-treating is often referred to as Beggars Night.

Part of the history of Halloween is Halloween costumes. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays goes back to the Middle Ages, and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain, although similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as far south as Italy. Shakespeare mentions the practice in his comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1593), when Speed accuses his master of "puling [whimpering, whining], like a beggar at Hallowmas."

Yet there is no evidence that souling was ever practiced in America, and trick-or-treating may have developed in America independent of any Irish or British antecedent. There is little primary Halloween history documentation of masking or costuming on Halloween in Ireland, the UK, or America before 1900. The earliest known reference to ritual begging on Halloween in English speaking North America occurs in 1911, when a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario, near the border of upstate New York, reported that it was normal for the smaller children to go street guising (see below) on Halloween between 6 and 7 p.m., visiting shops and neighbors to be rewarded with nuts and candies for their rhymes and songs. Another isolated reference appears, place unknown, in 1915, with a third reference in Chicago in 1920. The thousands of Halloween postcards produced between the turn of the 20th century and the 1920s commonly show children but do not depict trick-or-treating. Ruth Edna Kelley, in her 1919 history of the holiday, The Book of Hallowe'en, makes no mention of such a custom in the chapter "Hallowe'en in America." It does not seem to have become a widespread practice until the 1930s, with the earliest known uses in print of the term "trick or treat" appearing in 1934, and the first use in a national publication occurring in 1939. Thus, although a quarter million Scots-Irish immigrated to America between 1717 and 1770, the Irish Potato Famine brought almost a million immigrants in 1845-1849, and British and Irish immigration to America peaked in the 1880s, ritualized begging on Halloween was virtually unknown in America until generations later.

Trick-or-treating spread from the western United States eastward, stalled by sugar rationing that began in April 1942 during World War II and did not end until June 1947.

Early national attention to trick-or-treating was given in October 1947 issues of the children's magazines Jack and Jill and Children's Activities, and by Halloween episodes of the network radio programs The Baby Snooks Show in 1946 and The Jack Benny Show and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in 1948. The custom had become firmly established in popular culture by 1952, when Walt Disney portrayed it in the cartoon Trick or Treat, Ozzie and Harriet were besieged by trick-or-treaters on an episode of their television show, and UNICEF first conducted a national campaign for children to raise funds for the charity while trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-treating on the prairie. Although some popular histories of Halloween have characterized trick-or-treating as an adult invention to re-channel Halloween activities away from vandalism, nothing in the historical record supports this theory. To the contrary, adults, as reported in newspapers from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s, typically saw it as a form of extortion, with reactions ranging from bemused indulgence to anger. Likewise, as portrayed on radio shows, children would have to explain what trick-or-treating was to puzzled adults, and not the other way around. Sometimes even the children protested: for Halloween 1948, members of the Madison Square Boys Club in New York City carried a parade banner that read "American Boys Don't Beg."

6 questions never to ask during a job interview

Don't blow it.

What time would I have to arrive in the morning?
Not only is this like admitting that you're punctually challenged, it shows your future boss that you're more interested in your daily schedule than the actual work. Stay away from questions about logistics. This also applies to "How long is lunch?"

Try instead, "What's an average day like?" You'll likely wind up with more than enough information about hours and lunch perks.

How long has this company been around?
The cardinal rule being broken here: Never ask a question you could easily answer with a Google search. That includes everything from "Who's the CEO?" to "Where are corporate headquarters?" to "What's the most popular product you sell?" These types of questions make you seem unprepared, which for an employer is a red flag. Do the research before you come in, and while you're learning about the company, look for questions that can showcase your preparedness.

Instead try something like, "What kind of changes have you seen since so-in-so took over in June?"

On average, how quickly do people get promoted?
This signals that you're ambitious, and that's a desirable quality. But this question at a job interview can sound yucky and opportunistic. You want to show you're perfect for the job you're applying for, not the job three rungs up the ladder (even if you're sure you could handle that one, too).

Try instead, "What kind of opportunities are there for growth at this company?"

Do you do background checks?
Think of applying for a job as playing a video game: You must complete one level at a time until you attain the goal. In other words, cross each bridge as you come to it.

If you have something on public record that you don't want an employer to know about (and if you're asking this question, you obviously do), cross that bridge when you must, and no sooner. If you're lucky, the employer doesn't do background checks, and you're in the clear. If the company does, simply tell them what happened up-front, with whatever explanations are necessary, and give the go-ahead to run your background.

What's the salary?
This one is tempting. Of course you want to know what how much you'd make — what if the salary is so small you couldn't take the job even if it were offered? But this is a question for HR, preferably after you've been offered the position, not the interview. Again, the focus of the interview should be related to the work: Your background, the skills you're bringing to the table, and what sets you apart from other candidates.

Forget trying to get this information entirely, and instead ask something that shows how interested you are in the work. Career advisors recommend, "What does 'success' look like for this position?"

Did I get the job?
On a dinner date, you wouldn't ask for a kiss right after you finish the appetizer — so don't ask to close the deal with a potential employer moments after she's met you. It's too eager, and that's a turn-off.

Instead, thank her for the opportunity and say, "I'll follow up next week."

Alien Planet Count Passes 1,000 Worlds, a Milestone

Just two decades after first spotting planets orbiting a star other than our own sun, astronomers have notched a big milestone — the 1,000th alien planet.

Two of the five main databases that catalog exoplanet discoveries list 1,010 confirmed alien worlds as of today (Oct. 23). That's a lot of progress since 1992, when researchers found the first-ever exoplanets orbiting a spinning neutron star, or pulsar.

"The discovery of many worlds around other stars is a great achievement of science and technology. The work of scientists and engineers from many countries were necessary to achieve this difficult milestone," Abel Mendez Torres, of the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo's Planetary Habitability Laboratory, said in a statement Tuesday (Oct. 22). [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]

"However, 1,000 exoplanets in two decades is still a small fraction of those expected from the billions of stars in our galaxy," he added. "The next big goal is to better understand their properties, while detecting many new ones."

Indeed, the current tally is likely just the tip of the exoplanet iceberg. For example, a study published last year estimated that every star in the Milky Way hosts 1.6 planets on average — meaning that our galaxy likely harbors at least 160 billion alien worlds.

And those are just the planets with obvious parent stars. Another recent study calculated that "rogue planets" — those that cruise through space apparently unbound to any star — may outnumber "normal" worlds by 50 percent or so.

The number of confirmed planets should continue its dramatic upward swing in the near future as astronomers continue to hone their techniques and analyze data collected by instruments on the ground and in space.

The most prolific of these instruments is NASA's Kepler spacecraft, whose planet-hunting mission came to an end this past May after four years when the second of its four orientation-maintaining reaction wheels failed. Kepler has flagged nearly 3,600 planet candidates to date. Just 156 of them have been confirmed so far, but mission scientists expect at least 90 percent will end up being the real deal.

The five main exoplanet-discovery databases, and their current tallies, are: the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia (1,010); the Exoplanets Catalog, run by the Planetary Habitability Laboratory (1,010); the NASA Exoplanet Archive (919); the Exoplanet Orbit Database (755); and the Open Exoplanet Catalog (948).

Tomatoes: The Superfood Cure-All

Who knew that the secret to everything from disease prevention to glowing, healthy skin could be found in the world’s most popular fruit?

Tomatoes are a nutritional powerhouse, due in part to their high amount of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color, and may lower the risk of heart disease, improve vision, lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, and even decrease the risk of 9 common types of cancer.

Americans eat over 20 pounds of tomatoes each year. Botanically a fruit, the tomato belongs to the nightshade family, along with eggplants, peppers, and potatoes. They’re nutrient-dense and low in calories—a cup of tomatoes has only 32 calories! In addition to lycopene, the ruby-colored fruits are also loaded with vitamins A and C. But not all tomatoes are created equal. Organic tomatoes have higher concentrations of vitamin C and lycopene. Although conventional tomatoes are larger, the organically grown ones pack more of a nutritional punch.

Here are some of the truly impressive health benefits tomatoes offer.

Tomatoes beautify the skin and may even prevent sunburn
Want gorgeous skin? You’re in luck—lycopene boosts pro-collagen, the molecule that keeps your skin firm and youthful looking.

The same molecule may also help prevent sunburn. A small study showed that women who ate 55 grams of tomato paste each day had a 33 percent increase in skin protection against ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Although more research on a larger group of people is needed, and diet is not a substitute for sunscreen, it’s very possible that tomatoes offer some protection against sunburn.
Tomatoes shrink stroke risk by over 50 percent
The succulent fruit appears to be a boon to brain health. Researchers looked at over 1,000 Finish men to see if higher levels of lycopene in their blood serum reduced the risk of stroke—and sure enough, it did. Participants with more of the antioxidant in their blood lowered their risk of stroke by 55 to 59 percent. The study findings were published in the journal Neurology.

Learn the Warning Signs of Stroke

Tomatoes may help head off a heart attack
Following a tomato-rich Mediterranean diet—supplemented with extra virgin olive oil or mixed nuts—lowers the risk of major cardiovascular events (including heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes) by 30 percent, according to a new study published by the New England Journal of Medicine.

This study included over 7,000 participants, and randomly assigned them to one of three diets: a low-fat diet, a Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil, and a Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts. The low-fat diet fared the worst at preventing these diseases.

The Mediterranean diet, which is often high in tomatoes, emphasizes plant-based foods (such as fruits, vegetables), whole grains, nuts, fish, legumes, olive oil, and even wine.

Eating tomatoes boosts bone health—and could even save your life
A review article in American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine showed a link between eating tomatoes and a lowered risk of osteoporosis, the brittle bone disease that affects abut 10 million Americans, and can lead to bone fractures, disability, and deformity. The paper also reported that tomato consumption also helps ward off photoaging from UV light, cognitive dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease, the leading killer of Americans.

Lycopene in tomatoes may protect against 9 types of cancer
People with higher levels of lycopene in their blood have been shown in some studies to have a lower risk of certain types of cancer—particularly cancers affecting the prostate, lung, and stomach. Lycopene may also decrease risk for cancers of the mouth, breast, pancreas, cervix, colon, and rectum. In some studies, this protective effect was found only with tomatoes and tomato-based foods, and not with lycopene supplements. Further research is needed to collect more information, but there are clinical trials already underway to further understand whether tomatoes can help prevent or treat cancer.

Cancer and Your Diet: Make the Right Choices

Tomatoes may trim risk for Parkinson’s disease
Looks like lycopene is not the only disease-fighting ingredient in the tasty red fruit. It’s counterintuitive, but early research indicates that foods which contain small amounts of dietary nicotine, including tomatoes and peppers, may help prevent Parkinson’s (a movement disease that affects the nervous system), according to a study in the Annals of Neurology.

Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle looked at almost 500 patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s and a control group of 600 unaffected people. This protective effect appeared to be stronger in those who had little or no prior use of nicotine in the form of tobacco. More research will help determine whether it’s actually the dietary nicotine creating this protective effect, or if there are other factors at play.

Tomatoes promote healthier sleep
Tomatoes are literally part of a dream diet: The healthiest sleepers consume more lycopene, compared to people who skimp on slumber or snooze too much, according to a new research study from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, which was published in the journal Appetite.

And that’s not all. The same study showed that those with the healthiest sleep patterns (an average of 7 to 8 hours a night) also had higher levels of vitamin C in their diets. A cup of cherry tomatoes contains almost 20 mg of vitamin C, or around 31 percent of the recommended daily amount based on a 2,000 calorie-diet.

So, the next time you can’t sleep, reach for a juicy ripe tomato—and rest easy!
