HEALTHY BREAKFAST MEALS FOR TEENAGERS

Nutritious, balanced breakfast meals enhance teens' wellness.

Fruity Meals

Fruit provides an assortment of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which strengthen your teen's immune system. Fresh fruit also provides water, which supports hydration, and fiber, which enhances digestive function and fullness between meals. The American Dietetic Association suggests adding canned or frozen fruit to yogurt parfaits. Sliced banana and berries can add nutrients and sweet flavor to hot and cold cereals. For a healthy on-the-go meal, try blending fresh or frozen fruit with yogurt and pure fruit juice or low-fat milk to create a tasty smoothie. Pure fruit juice can also add valuable amounts of nutrients to breakfast meals.

Veggie-Meals

The words vegetables and breakfast may not match up in your teen's mind. Vegetables can easily add nutrients, color and flavor to a variety of breakfast dishes, however. Try adding chopped vegetables to omelets and breakfast burritos. If you're in a hurry, MayoClinic.com recommends leftover veggie pizza, which provides a good balance of carbohydrates from the crust, protein from cheese and vegetables from tomato sauce and topping.

Hearty Whole Grains

Whole grains are valuable sources of fiber and nutrients, such as B vitamins and iron. Incorporating whole grains into breakfast meals can enhance your teen's energy levels, physical wellness and brain function, according to the American Dietetic Association. A variety of whole grain foods work well into tasty breakfast meals. Try replacing conventional pancakes with whole grain pancakes, either from scratch or with whole grain baking mix. Dip whole grain bread in low-fat milk and egg whites to create heart-healthy french toast. Additional whole grain breakfast options include whole grain cold cereals or oatmeal served with low-fat milk and fruit, quinoa and egg or tofu scramble, and breakfast burritos made with whole wheat or whole grain corn tortillas. If your teen is eating on-the-run, send along a whole grain cereal bar and fruit or peanut butter and jelly sandwich made with whole grain bread.

Egg Dishes

Eggs provide valuable amounts of protein, which enhances lean tissue growth and repair, fullness between meals and your teen's ability to concentrate and maintain healthy energy levels throughout the day. Since breakfast meals too often lack protein, according to the American Dietetic Association, incorporate eggs or other protein-rich foods into your teen's breakfast meals routinely. Examples of egg-containing breakfast meals include scrambled eggs, vegetable omelets and breakfast sandwiches made with whole grain English muffins, a scrambled or fried egg, low-fat cheese and sliced tomato.

TOP 10 HEALTHY BREAKFAST FOODS

Begin each morning with a healthy breakfast and feel great all day.

Cold Cereals

Ready-to-eat cereal is a traditional breakfast favorite. Choose high fiber, low sugar versions for healthier "out-of-the- box" treat, aiming for 5g of fiber and fewer than 13g of sugar per serving. Be adventurous by mixing different brands or use a low-fat granola recipe. Pour on low-fat milk instead of whole milk. Soy milk or 100 percent orange juice can be used as alternatives.

Hot Cereals

Oatmeal is a often thought of when hot cereal is mentioned, but there are other options such as grits, farina, quinoa, muesli and brown rice. Toppings can alter the benefits of choosing hot cereal, so keep portions within 1 to 2 tbsp. Healthy suggestions include dried fruits such as raisins or figs, or nuts, such as almonds or walnuts. Sprinkle sugar gingerly or use honey, a nutritious alternative. Remember spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves and sugar substitutes are calorie-free.

Better Breads

The USDA My Pyramid guidelines recommend selecting one-half of daily grain servings from whole grain sources. Check ingredient lists on food labels for the words "whole grain" or "whole wheat". Stuff a whole-wheat pita with hard-boiled eggs. Skip the butter or margarine and spread fruit yogurt on English muffins or multigrain toast. Top waffles and pancakes with fresh fruit, natural peanut butter or low-sugar jams or jellies.

Easy Eggs

Breakfasts containing at least 5g protein keep blood sugar levels from dropping midmorning according to dietitians at the Mayo Clinic. Eggs contain 7g protein. Serve eggs poached, soft-boiled, hard-boiled or scrambled. Hard-boiled eggs prepared the night before can be eaten on the run. Scrambled eggs slip easily into whole wheat burrito or taco shells along with reduced-fat Cheddar cheese and salsa.

Breakfast Meats

Lean slices of meat, poultry and fish provide protein to start the day. Try making a whole-wheat sandwich with leftover chicken and cranberry sauce. Mix chopped apples, raisins and low-fat mayonnaise into tuna fish. For a quick pick-me-up, layer several whole grain crackers with turkey ham cubes and cherry tomatoes.

Delicious Dairy

Increasing dairy consumption helps weight loss efforts according to Dr. S. Faghih and colleagues at the National Nutrition and Food Technology Institute in Tehran. The study reported in the March 2010 issue of "Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease" found women who consume 3 servings of low-fat milk as part of a reduced calorie meal plan loose more belly fat than those who do not. So grab a container of low-fat yogurt or single-serving cottage cheese in the morning. Add fresh fruit, flaxseed and a tablespoon of granola.

Versatile Veggies

Vegetables possess powerful antioxidants making them a nutritious choice any time of the day. Add cooked vegetables to omelets or garnish a baked potato with broccoli and grated cheese. Enjoy a slice of leftover vegetable pizza. Instead of fruit juice, pick up a can of vegetable juice.

Cereal Bars

Cereal bars can be a healthful option as long as fiber content is above 5g and sugar content is less than 13g per serving. However, bars do not satisfy nutritional needs alone. Drink a glass of low-fat milk and eat a piece of fruit along with this handy treat.

Simple Smoothies

Whip up healthy breakfast drinks. Blend 6 oz. of low-fat, high protein vanilla Greek yogurt and add 1 cup of fresh fruit. Frozen fruit is absolutely fine too. If you are not a yogurt fan, mix an avocado with frozen raspberries, orange juice and soy milk.

Worthwhile Weekends

Weekends are a wonderful time to prepare breakfast for the week. Make up extra pancakes, muffins and sandwiches and place them in individual packages. Planning ahead reduces the likelihood breakfast will be skipped. When you eat a healthy breakfast you are more likely to control your weight, concentrate better and be productive throughout the day.

Ramadan Kareem Meaning | Ramadan Mubarak Meaning

Ramadan Kareem is a greeting in the Arabic language that is used to wish happiness during the start of the holy month of Ramadan. The word Kareem means generous or bountiful in the Arabic language. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Muslim calendar. Muslims will wish each other Ramadan Kareem at the start of the Ramadan month. Also used is Ramadan Mubarak. Mubarak means blessed in the Arabic language.

The holy month of Ramadan is a very important month for Muslim because the first verses of the Holy Qur'an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad during a period of meditation and solitude in a cave near Mecca in the 7th Century. Therefore, Ramadan has been set aside for acts of worship and fasting. Muslims spend the month in meditation, prayer and abstinence from food, drinks, smoking and sexual acts between dawn and dusk.

The fast, during this month, is intended to be a challenging act taking the believer to a higher level of closeness to God. Some of the expected outcomes are cleansing of the soul by staying away from worldly pleasures, practicing self-discipline, sacrifice, generosity and charity.

Muslims believe that the gates of hell, and Satan are locked up during this month while the gates of heaves are open. Also, God forgives all previous sins of those who fast and pray sincerely during the month of Ramadan.

Muslims spend much time reading the Quran during this month. Many try to finish the enture Quran within the month, while others strive to complete the Quran several times.

Prophet Muhammad has said that:

Whosoever recites only one 'Ayat' in Holy Ramadan, he will be awarded as if he had recited the full Qur'an, in other months. Holy Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.)
